Custom Bathroom Cabinet by JMF

Today was the big pay off day. It had taken me 4-5 days a week for the last 4 weeks to build this beautiful cabinet. I was very frustrated as I was getting closer to being done with all the work I had put into this gaint cabinet. With the heat of summer it was nice to install it inside with a little AC to help keep me cool. I had a lot of firsts today as I have had through this entire project. I have built other things but none was a big or as detailed as this cabinet. It is hard to see in this picture but the cabinet is 95" tall by 22" wide by 30" deep. There are 4 doors (2 on top and 2 on bottom). There are 4 drawers that are 16" long by about 5" deep (they are the 4 top handles of the 8 horizontal handles). Then there are 2 drawers that are 28" deep that span the whole width. I was surprised how well the finished product came out. I think I will be the only one who sees the imperfections that there may be. Overall, I am very proud of how the whole thing turned out. There will be a few minor adjustments that I have to make another day but the whole bathroom is coming closer to being completed. I will keep you updated as I progress towards the final finish line in this wonderful journey of a bathroom remodel.

Bathroom Cabinet Continued

Once I completed building the drawers and the shell of the cabinet, I spent another 3 days custom building the drawer faces and the cabinet drawers. It is hard to see but the is a lot of fancy detail work that was needed to make all 10. There was a lot of grace from God those few days helping me make all the pieces nearly the same perfect size. I also owe my parents a huge thanks because I held their garage captive for a week while I built the drawers, their face pieces, and the doors. I also spent one hole day installing all of the drawer slides. Once I finally got the entire project home, I spent 2 days sanding everything and getting the whole thing ready for paint and the stain for the drawers themselves. All the preparation I took paid off in the end. The finish work will blow you away in the next post.

Bathroom Cabinet Orgination

There is one picture that shows a little piece of the old cabinet that wasn't really functional prior to our bathroom remodel. Then there is a picture of it once the renovation was completed by the contractors. I ripped out the old cabinet then designed a new one to go in its place. I attatched 2 copies of its shell. This took me about 3 days to design and then build with a skill saw, a router, and a couple clamps. The drawers came later and took an entire 2 days to build. Each is a custom fit to the hole it was made for. This is all just the begining.

New Vanity!

Today we bought a vanity that fit our bathroom perfectly. It was everything we were looking for. It doesn't take up too much floor space but gives us more counter space than the previous stand alone sink. We are real happy and can't wait to add the finishing touches.

The Contractors are DONE!!!

They contractors put two long days into completing the bathroom so that Danae could come home with Ethan on Saturday night. They finished tiling and put the grout in. All they have left to do is install the fixtures in the shower and seal all the tile and grout. We are happy with the turn out. Now it is my turn to get my hands a little dirty. We have found the vanity that we want and are eager to build new shelving in the place of the old ones. We just have to figure out when we will have the finances for that since wood is so expensive. Additionally I will put in new base boards and trim. Then a little bit of paint will finish it all off. The pictures do little justice. Hope everyone will be able to visit soon enough to see the renovation in person. I will do my best to update the blog with each of the next steps involved.

Day 8: So much closer!!!

Mark and Patrick made great strides today. They arrived early at 6am this moring and finished the exterior of shower. You can't even tell they did work there. They also filled in the old heater that was in the wall and installed the GFI outlet. They also finished tiling around the tub minus the finishing tile which they will install tomorrow. They also installed all of the tile on the floor. They also patched all of the holes in the walls throughout the whole bathroom. Tomorrow they are going to grout the floor and the tub and prep the shower floor so they can tile it on Saturday. We are so close to them being done. It will lift some of the weight off of our shoulders. Then I get to do a lot of the finish work. I can't wait to get my hands dirty with this home improvement project. I am glad I let them do all the work they did. There is no way I would have been as efficient as they have been. My next post will be on Sunday.

Day 7

Here are the photos from day seven. The work that I found completed was they finished tiling the walls in the shower. They also made the step into the shower slop towards the shower so water will run off it into the shower. They also smoothed out the surface around the tub and installed the first row of tile. They also filed in and converted the old wall heater into a GFI outlet. There is still a lot of work to be done. They just have to tile the shower door jamb, tile the shower floor, and put the 1/4 round trim around the top of the shower. They also have to finish the tiling around the shower by adding a row of glass followed by 1 more row of tile and the 1/4 round for that. They also have to finish smoothing around the outside of the shower, tile the bathroom floor including all of the prep work for that. All the plumbing fixtures need to be installed, wiring for the lamp fixture needs to be updated, and the switches for all the different lights and fans to be installed. Additionally they need to install the trim work for the recessed lighting and install the lights. Finally, they need to do all the grout work. I hope they can get it all done by Friday night so the Mrs. and the kid can move back home on Saturday. It is all in Gods hands now. Thanks for all of your support.
